• Relays aren't used much anymore

  • some traffic light controllers are still electro-mechanical

• Modern digital systems are designed inCMOS technology (Complementary MOS)

  • MOS stands for Metal-Oxide on Semiconductor
  • it is called complementary because there are both normally-open and normally-closed switches

• MOS transistors act as voltage-controlled switches

  • similar, though easier to work with than relays.
