Asking Questions & Getting Help

It is very important to us that you succeed in CSE 351! Outside of lectures and sections, there are several ways to ask questions or discuss course issues:

  1. Find a study group! This quarter, all assignments, other than exams, can be completed and submitted in partnerships (labs) or larger groups (reading, homework), allowing you to discuss material, code, and debug together.
  2. Visit office hours! See the Weekly Calendar for current availability, noting that all office hours this quarter will either be in-person or virtual, but not hybrid.
  3. Make a public post about course content on the , where they benefit the whole class. This also allows other students to answer your question so can receive a faster response. This is the best way of asking questions about class-related topics.
  4. Make a private post to just the course staff on the with any issues you would prefer to discuss privately or questions that involve solutions or partial solutions for ongoing assignments.
  5. Request a 1-on-1 using . If you feel like you need extra time, can't make it to OH, or want to discuss something privately, please feel free to request a 1-on-1 from the staff!
  6. Send to the course staff. The instructor will try to address the issue and share it with others only as appropriate, but will not have a way to reply to you without addressing the whole class.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT WAS YOUR ACADEMIC PATH?
I grew up in Springfield, Oregon, but I left after I graduated high school in 2012. I enlisted in the Navy in 2014 to pay for university and to learn more about computer hardware - I trained as an Electronics Technician on instrumentation and control systems for nuclear power and propulsion plants. My goal is to build on that knowledge base as the green energy revolution continues - that's why I'm here at Paul Allen.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES, TALENTS, AND SKILLS?
I play mandolin in my spare time, usually accompanied by sea shanties or Irish folk singing. I'm a sucker for sci-fi TV shows (ask me anything about Stargate SG-1). I also GM Pathfinder 1st Edition - still learning the ropes for 2E.

HAVE YOU DONE OR EXPERIENCED ANYTHING REMARKABLE OR MEMORABLE?
I was nearly hit by a missile in 2018. My ship was conducting a test fire of a forward missile battery while I was discussing an upcoming review board with my Chief on the starboard mess deck. I'm still not sure if it was operator or technical error that caused it, but the forward battery did not fire - the aft battery, just forward of the flight deck, fired instead, launching off the starboard side and veering left towards the simulated target. We heard the missile pass the ship a few feet from the hull - it was deafening, to say the least. The CO passed a word on the announcing system a few minutes later, to clear up what had just happened and to congratulate the Fire Controlmen on a successful (if unorthodox) kill on the simulated target.

WHAT COMMITMENTS WILL BE CONSUMING YOUR CYCLES THIS QUARTER?
Beyond working as your TA, I'll be taking a full courseload focused on circuit design, interviewing for internships next summer, and completing the legal aspects of my gender transition.

Right now I am a CS, Math double major.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT WAS YOUR ACADEMIC PATH?
I grew up near Seattle, WA. I enjoyed math in high school and took my first computer science class (APCS) in my last year of HS. From there, I started a few personal projects, and found myself drawn to the problem-solving aspect of computer science.
When I took CSE 351 last winter, I enjoyed both the technical and socio-technical content introduced in the course. Personally, one of the most challenging yet most interesting aspects of this course was how it jumped between many so levels of abstraction--from the specifics of how hardware and software fit together to how computers operate at a high level, and even broader yet, how computers and society interact with one another.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES, TALENTS, AND SKILLS?
- I enjoy exploring the PNW outdoors! Hiking is always fun. I made a day trip to Mt. Rainier this summer and it was super memorable.
- I love to do work in cafes and soak in the soft, soothing ambiance while sipping on a warm oat milk latte.
- Another old hobby I have is speedsolving the Rubik's Cube. I stopped practicing but used to solve it in 20 seconds!

HAVE YOU DONE OR EXPERIENCED ANYTHING REMARKABLE OR MEMORABLE?
Thinking back over the past few years, my most remarkable memory is probably working at MOD Pizza the summer before I started college. I met so many people with backgrounds and stories I will never forget, and whom I probably would never have met had I never worked at MOD.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT WAS YOUR ACADEMIC PATH?
- I grew up right here in Seattle! I ended up doing a lot of programming in high school, and spent my last year of high school at North Seattle College where I finished up the intro courses and really found an affinity for the subject. I'm currently in my second year at the UW studying Computer Engineering.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES, TALENTS, AND SKILLS?
- I spend a lot of my spare time reading or playing the piano. I really enjoy badminton, but I'm a little rusty right now so I'm trying to get back into it. I've got a real soft spot for puzzles - I can solve a Rubik's cube, and a couple of their variants as well!

HAVE YOU DONE OR EXPERIENCED ANYTHING REMARKABLE OR MEMORABLE?
- I used to be a competitive debater back in high school, and made it to what they called the "Tournament of Champions" my sophmore year by placing well enough at two huge, ~100 team national tournaments. I thought I was pretty good 😛

WHAT COMMITMENTS WILL BE CONSUMING YOUR CYCLES THIS QUARTER?
