Lectures in the age of Zoom

This quarter we're using Zoom for lectures. It's a new experience for all of us and we're making up the rules as we go. This page summarizes how we're going to try to do it, but we'll definitely make changes to improve things as we gain more experience. Please contribute your ideas, experiences, and suggestions -- the class discussion board is a great place for this.

We are using the brand new UW Zoom-in-Canvas interface to make real-time and recorded lectures available to students in the class. Hunter Schafer put together a great web page for his CSE 163 class with information about how this works, complete with screen shots and examples, and links to UW help pages about using Zoom. Please follow the above link to get a general overview of what the interface looks like and how to access the class Zoom meetings. The CSE 163 page also includes at the bottom a great set of guidelines about how to behave in a Zoom meeting doing collaborative work. We'll do some things a bit differently, outlined below, but the overall advice is excellent.

Here's the plan for how lectures will work in CSE 333 this quarter:

Good luck and be sure to post reactions, suggestions, and comments to the class discussion board so we can get better at this as we go.

The recordings will only be accessible to students enrolled in the course to review materials. These recordings will not be shared with or accessible to the public.

The University and Zoom have FERPA-compliant agreements in place to protect the security and privacy of UW Zoom accounts. Students who do not wish to be recorded should:
