Overview
You are encouraged to discuss concepts from lecture, section, reading, and homework with your peers in 331. On homework assignments, you will be asked to report the names of everybody who collaborated with, and briefly describe the nature of your collaboration.
Important: “Collaboration” in this context means discussing the course material and homework problems with others, not writing the same homework solution together. You should each turn in your own solution and it should be your own work.
Administrative Details
Each homework assignment will ask you to write down names of your collaborators. Write the names of everybody with whom you have discussed the homework, including peers in CSE 331 and other people outside of CSE 331. You do not need to include names of CSE 331 staff. If you did not discuss the homework with anybody, write “None”.
While collaborating, keep in mind the Academic Integrity policy and do not spoil the intellectual challenge of the homework for yourself or others.
- Reporting your collaborators (or “none”) will be part of your class participation grade. (Free points!)
Philosophy
The spirit of this policy is to encourage you to connect with your peers over the course material, and to build an awareness of how conversations with peers can impact your learning.
While UW CSE may often feel like a very competitive environment, it can be refreshing to remember that you and your peers are in the same boat. You’re all learning together and can be a great resource to each other.
Sometimes the best way to understand a concept is to talk through it with a peer. If you are able to explain a concept to somebody else, that’s a strong sign that you’ve likely mastered the concept.
You are encouraged to meet with your classmates outside of class, for example, in study groups.
If you would like help finding collaborators, email the staff list to describe the kind of collaboration you are looking for and we will help you to connect with other students.
- If you find this policy to be unclear, confusing, or contradictory, please email the staff list!!!
