Second Chance Quizzes

In the last week of classes, we will give you a second-chance to show us that you know the content of up to two of the four quizzes (of your choice).

Generally, the score that will go into the gradebook is MAX( first-chance, MIN(90%, second-chance)). That is, taking the second chance cannot decrease your score, but you cannot score higher than 90% on the second-chance exam.

There are a few rare, but important, exceptions to the policy above:

• If you had an excused absence that caused you to not take the first chance at a particular quiz, and also miss all the makeups that week (e.g., you were sick for the whole week), then your score is just what you get on the second-chance exam (there is no 90% cap), as it's really your first chance at taking that exam.
• If you are found responsible for violating course academic integrity policies in completing either the first-chance or second-chance at a quiz, any penalty applies to both attempts (e.g., if the penalty is a 0 on the exam, you get a 0 overall, not the maximum of the two scores, even if you are only found responsible in one of the sittings). Penalties may also include affecting which quizzes are dropped (more details in the syllabus).

Logistics

To take the second-chance quizzes, you must fill out this form in advance. You will need to be logged in to your at-CS account to fill out the form (if you run into issues, try opening an incognito window and then logging in there). We will be using that form to make sure we have the right amount of exam copies.

The form will close on Wednesday March 11th at noon.

Note that the form requires you to tell us which quizzes you intend to retake.

The second chance quizzes are in ARC 147 and/or BAG 131 (the same rooms as the midterm); we aim to start at 6, but since the logistics are complicated, may be a bit delayed.

You will be in the same room you were for the midterm (last names A-Li in ARC 147; Lo-Z in BAG 131). We will not pre-assign seats (but we may tell you to make sure you have a different color paper than the person seated next to you when choosing your seat, for example).

Staff may ask you to move to specific seats (to make sure you aren't near someone with the same quiz), and may choose which of the quizzes you do first.

If you only want to retake one quiz, you'll do that first and be free to go after you're done with that one. If you are retaking two quizzes, please wait in your seats when the first quiz ends and do not discuss the quiz you just took (as others may be retaking that quiz in the second set of quizzes).

Makeups

Since second chances are optional, we will be very limited in offering makeups. Makeups will only be offered because of significant illness/emergencies, or hard conflicts (e.g., another course having an exam at the same time), and will all be completed by the last day of classes.

Content and Coverage policies

Generally, the allowable content matches whatever was allowed for the original quiz.

We are aiming for difficulty to match the practice material you were provided (i.e., the practice quizzes for the quizzes).

You should not expect the number and types of problems to match precisely (there may be varying numbers and types of parts).

We do not have new practice material (but you can use the practice material on the original exam pages).

Any other exam policies will also match the original version, with the following exception: For simplicity, we'll provide you with the final exam reference packet for every second-chance quiz.
