Overview¶
The presentation will be given in section on Thursday, March 12.
Writing your code and your report is a very technical process. A big part of discussing research is trying to make it accessible to a general audience so that more people can benefit from your work. For this part of the project or portfolio, you and/or your group will make a presentation explaining the high-level points of your work to a general audience. You should assume the audience of your presentation is not familiar with the details of your report or code.
Details¶
You and/or your group will complete the following components:
-
Give a presentation for your project or portfolio (if working in a group, all members must speak in the same presentation)
Give a 3-minute presentation using a slide deck (or other tool) highlighting the project or portfolio’s big ideas. For the project, include the following details:
- Title and authors
- Motivation
- Research questions
- Methods
- Results, visualizations, and key takeaways
- Future work, or future directions for this project
For the portfolio, include the following details:
- Title and author
- Summary of narrative/theme
- Revised creative work and task descriptions
- Summary of revisions, with visualizations (if applicable)
- Lessons learned, or things you’ll carry forward
There are a few expectations of your presentation:
- Presentations should clearly convey the information listed above.
- The details of your presentation/artifact should cover the highlights of your work without requiring all the detail of your code or report. It should be understandable to someone who has not read your report yet.
- If you are working in a group, all group members must present some meaningful aspect of the project.
Here are some additional guidelines:
- Your presentation length should not exceed 3 minutes (like a lightning talk). This is a hard limit to ensure that everyone has time to present. Part of the challenge of creating a presentation is selecting what you prioritize, so you should only pick the most important part of your work to present to fit within the time limit!
- Tanscripts and/or subtitles are not required, but they are appreciated and encouraged for accessibility.
-
Watch peer presentations (individually)
You will also be responsible for an additional task of watching and giving feedback on your peers’ presentations. You will be assigned 2-3 presentations to give feedback for during section on March 12. This will be submitted alongside your submission for Part 5 (Peer Feedback).
Submission¶
There is no graded submission for the presentation, but you should plan to come to section on March 12 to give your presentation and hear your peers’ presentations! Your TA will be in touch about a section Google folder to submit presentation slides to ensure that we can maximize section time.
If you are working in a group, every group member must attend all sections represented by the group. For example, if you are working in a group of 3 with members from sections AC, AG, and AH, all members must attend AC, AG, and AH for the presentations.
Note: The Presentation and Peer Feedback go hand-in-hand, so make sure that you show up to section for this!
Grading¶
Presentations will be assessed out of 20 points, 10 for meeting all requirements and 10 for the presentation itself. The presentation will be assessed along the following components:
| Score | Timing | Preparedness | Visual Aids |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | — | Presenter(s) clearly communicate main ideas throughout; there is a logical ordering to the presentation | Information on slides is well-organized, readable, and relevant to the oral presentation |
| 2 | Presentation is within the 3-minute limit | Difficulty understanding or following presentation without clarifying questions | Slides are visually inaccessible, illegible, or contain distractors from the presentation |
| 0 | Presentation exceeds the 3-minute limit | Major difficulty understanding or following the presentation, or presentation not given | No visual aids used during presentation* |
* No deductions for visual aids will be made on the basis of technical difficulties, i.e., if the projector is not working but you have slides, you will still receive credit for them.
Makeup Presentations¶
Generally, no makeups will be given for the presentation. However, if you have an immovable conflict that you were aware of before presentation day or if section time runs out before you are able to present, you/your group may alternately give your presentation during Suh Young’s office hours on March 13 (see Office Hours for more information). This is the only makeup time for the presentation.
Caution!
The makeup office hour is only for students with immovable conflicts or if time runs out during section. It is a backup, not an alternate.
