Data Science Fair

Overview¶

Writing your code and your report is a very technical process. A big part of discussing research is trying to make it accessible to a general audience so that more people can benefit from your work. For this part of the project, you and your group will make a presentation explaining the high-level points of your project to a general audience. You should assume the audience of your presentation is not familiar with the details of your project report or code.

The presentation will primarily take the form for the “CSE 163 Data Science Fair” which will be a poster session where you can show off your project results to attendees. The CSE 163 Data Science Fair will be Wednesday 06/08 from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm in the Allen Center Atrium. Each group will prepare a poster (or equivalent).

Details¶

All students should attend the CSE 163 Data Science Fair on Wednesday 06/08 from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm in Allen Center Atrium. The CSE 163 Data Science Fair will be a poster session where students present their work to attendees. By “present” we mean be standing by your poster when audience members walk around, there is no formal presentation on a stage in front of the whole group or anything like that.

Some groups may elect to make a video instead of making a poster they display at the CSE 163 Data Science Fair (details below). Regardless if you are presenting a poster or not, you will still need to attend as an audience member.

As mentioned above, there are two main ways to do this part of the project outlined in the next two sections. Your group has to decide together which option you want since some parts of this are shared while others are done individually. Every member of the group has to choose either Option 1 or Option 2 together.

The specifications for each option are considered separately. Once you and your group choose one option (for example, Option 1), you can entirely ignore any instructions for Option 2.

Option 1) Poster for CSE 163 Data Science Fair¶

For this option, you and your group will complete the following two components:

1. Make a poster for the CSE 163 Data Science Fair (only one per group, made by all group members)

   Your poster should include the following details. Since you will be present to talk about your project with audience members, you do not need to make your poster as verbose as your report. You should provide enough detail on the poster to aid anyone listening to you talk about your project with key points or visuals.

   • Title and authors and group number
     • Your group number will be assigned at a later date and communicated to you over email
   • Motivation and background
   • Research questions
   • Methodology
   • Results, visualizations, and key takeaways
   • Future work, or future directions for this project

   Your poster will be assessed by your project mentor in conjunction with the things you talk about during your discussion with them when they visit your poster.

   We use the term “poster” here broadly. We are not going to be assessing you on printing a professionally-designed poster. You’re only being assessed on the content of your poster and your presentation. Printing out pieces of paper to clip to a poster board or equivalent is totally acceptable. See here for various printing resources on campus.

   At the poster session, we will be providing easels, poster boards, and binder clips so you just need to bring yourself and the poster or printed papers.

2. Attend the CSE 163 Data Science Fair

   The CSE 163 Data Science Fair will be split into two halves with a Session A and Session B. During the first half of the poster fair, the Session A groups will be presenting their posters around the Atrium while the Session B groups will be the audience members walking around. Then, halfway through the poster session the presenters and audience will switch so that Session B groups are now presenting and Session A groups are now audience members. You will be emailed before the date of the CSE 163 Data Science Fair which session you will be presenting.

   Every student should plan on being at the CSE 163 Data Science Fair during the whole slot, but as specified above only half of the time will be spent actively at your poster presenting to audience members. There will be space reserved for groups to leave their posters while they aren’t presenting.

   • As a presenter (done together as a group), you and your group should be present near your poster during your half of the CSE 163 Data Science Fair. The entire group should be present during your presenting time and you will have time to view other projects later. You should talk with audience members as they come by about your project to let them know about what you did. During your time as a presenter, your TA mentor will stop by your group to grade your poster and presentation. Here are a few expectations of your poster presentation:

     • Clearly conveys the information listed on your poster.
     • The details of your presentation/artifact should be the most important parts of your project without requiring all the detail of your code or report. It should be understandable to someone who has not read your report yet.
     • If you are working in a group, all group members must present some meaningful aspect of the project during the presentation.
     • Your presentation should take about 3-5 minutes. We will not be timing you, but audience members can’t stick around for a 10 minute presentation.

   • As an audience member (done separately as individuals), you should be walking around to other groups’ posters to see what they did. You are encouraged to ask questions about their process and results. You will also be writing down a summary of some discussion points for groups that you talked with and turn that in at the end of the poster fair (more on this below).

Option 2) Video Presentation¶

For this option, you and your group will complete the following three components:

1. Make a video presentation for your project (one per group, made by all group members)

   Submit a 3-5 minute video presenting a slide deck (or other tool) highlighting the project’s big ideas. Your presentation should convey the following details:

   • Title and authors
   • Motivation
   • Research questions
   • Methods
   • Results, visualizations, and key takeaways
   • Future work, or future directions for this project

   There are a few expectations of your video:

   • Your video should be no longer than 6 minutes long.
   • Clearly conveys the information listed above.
   • The details of your presentation/artifact should be the most important parts of your project without requiring all the detail of your code or report. It should be understandable to someone who has not read your report yet.
   • If you are working in a group, all group members must present some meaningful aspect of the project during the video.
   • Your video is submitted on some online service like Youtube, Google Drive, or Dropbox. You don’t need to make the videos public, but make sure it is accessible to anyone with the link.
   Recording Tips

   Zoom is the easiest way to record the video with screenshare and team members. Since this is such a short video, don’t bother editing and just re-take the video. This might take a 5 or more takes—think of each take as practice for a live presentation. If team members are not able to meet synchronously, you can also edit-together shorts from each team member.

   If you are working alone, there are other screen recording tools such CamStudio (Windows only) and Quicktime, but Zoom also works for solo projects as well!

2. Attend the data science fair as an attendee for the whole time (individually)

   Since you made a video instead of a poster, there is no presentation you need to do during the CSE 163 Data Science fair. You will still attend as an audience member for the entire session.

   As an audience member, you should be walking around to other groups’ posters to see what they did. You are encouraged to ask questions about their process and results. You will also be writing down a summary of some discussion points for groups that you talked with and turn that in at the end of the poster fair (more on this below).

3. Watch other groups’ videos (individually)

   Since you did not present at the data science fair, you will also be responsible for an additional task of watching other the videos of other groups’ that selected option 2. You will be assigned 3 - 5 videos to watch and provide feedback to. Details for which videos you will be watching and how to provide feedback will be detailed later.

Submission¶

What you submit will depend which option you and your group decided. The deliverable (poster or video) is due before the CSE 163 Data Science Fair at 2:30 pm on Wednesday 06/08. The attendance form you turn in is due at the end of the data science fair.

• Option 1 (poster): You will need to submit the following:
  • Your “poster”, again defined broadly. You can keep it after the fair. This is due at the beggining of the CSE 163 Data Science Fair.
  • Attending the fair and presenting your work to audience members and your TA mentor as they walk around the different booths.
  • Attending the CSE 163 Data Science Fair and submitting your worksheet you filled out during the fair (in-person).
• Option 2 (video): You will need to submit the following:
  • Submitting your video before the CSE 163 Data Science Fair via Google Form (link soon). This is due at the beggining of the CSE 163 Data Science Fair.
  • Attending the CSE 163 Data Science Fair and submitting your worksheet you filled out during the fair (in-person).
  • Watching the videos of some other groups that did the video option and providing feedback on their video (link soon). This will be due the same time as the next part of the project (Peer Feedback).
