Chunithm is a series of arcade rhythm games released by Sega. With its huge library of J-pop, anime and Niconico songs, it has never made its way outside Japan. So of course I had to go to Japan in order to play this game, but the days were satisfying.

Gameplay Hardware

The gameplay of Chunithm involves two different input methods. The first one is the "Ground Slider", which is where users tap to interact with the game. Another is 5 pairs of sensors mounted to the walls on each side of the arcade cabinet. They detect objects above the touch sensor, so users can wave their hands in the mid-air, which is where the gameplay mechanism gets unique. In fact, a developing emulator of this game, Seaurchin, describes itself as the following:

某スライドして手を跳ね上げる音ゲーシミュレーター
from README of the Seaurchin project

It means "The simulator of a rhythm game in which you slide and lift up your hands". What an accurate description.

Optional Accessories

In-Game elements

There are four basic types of objects to deal with when you start playing:

  • Red note: just tap at the right timing
  • Blue and orange long notes: tap and hold until they reach their ends
  • Green up-arrow: lift either of your hands up at the right time
  • Purple notes in mid-air (air-action): wave your hand VERTICALLY in mid-air. Timing doesn't matter much in this case, but try your best.

It is worth noting that long notes can move from the left side to the right, and vice versa. It is important to get used to getting your arms crossed during the gameplay. You can look up on YouTube, where you can find videos of many difficult songs.

Timing and Accuracy Assessment

Notes to be tapped are supposed to be in sync with the rhythm. In other words, they come in sync to quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes of the music you've selected. You will soon notice that you don't need to watch notes entering the orange judgement line at the bottom of the screen. Your ears may help you. Watch the density of upcoming notes and make your decisions.

To assess your accuracy throughout one play, There are 4 accuracy windows, from the most accurate to the least:

  1. JUSTICE CRITICAL
  2. JUSTICE
  3. ATTACK
  4. MISS

If you finish a song with no MISS, you get a Full Combo. If you finish it with ONLY JUSTICE and JUSTICE CRITICAL judgements, you get All Justice instead.

Now you can add this game to your plan of the next visit to Japan!
