ABOUT ME

Max Bi

Hi! I'm a senior studying Statistics with a concentration in Data Science here at the UW. I recently became a TA for this class after taking it in Autumn 2021 primarily as a prerequisite to INFO 474: Interactive Information Visualization. I've continued, however, since I feel that being able to go from not knowing anything about web dev to being able to build a full-stack project by the end of the course is something so impressive (and because the teaching team is genuingely great)!

CSE 154 Tips, Ranked by Importance

  1. Start early! Some of the assignments in this class take quite a decent chunk of time to complete; whether it's iterating through 9 bad ideas for a CP to finally come up with a good one on the 10th try(may or may not be personal experience...) or chipping away at the requirements for a HW, any progress is good progress. HW2 is a big spike in difficulty for many students, and the workload for subsequent HWs stays relatively constant. Budget time accordingly.
  2. Section slides are your best friend! Always refer to the slides when you get stuck implementing a feature in your assignments, from examples directly on the slides or an example solution linked inside them. It should go without saying, but don't copy a section exercise for a Creative Project. We do check.
  3. Ask questions, whether it's on ED or in class! Clarifying a concept you don't understand right away and then being able to follow along with lecture is much better than getting hung up on figuring it out while lecture is going on, making it harder for your brain to re-join the instructor's stream of thought a minute later. Questions in these places often tend to get answered much more quickly than emails to individual staff members and have the added benefit of helping your peers, who likely have similar questions.
