welcome to 154!
Welcome to class! I hope you are excited to be in this class. 154
has been one of the most rewarding classes I have taken at UW because the
knowledge you gain is applicable far beyond these next 10 weeks. The material we cover
will not only introduce you to a variety of new languages, but will also emphasize the
similarities and connections between them. Beyond this, you will gain new strategies for
effectively learning new programming languages which is a skill you can apply to your
future CS endeavors, both in and outside of a classroom setting.
I encourage you to have fun with this class. This quarter will undoubtedly be
stressful but keep in mind that this class allows for and encourages creative freedom.
Take advantage of this by investing quality time into the work you complete. I will do my
absolute best to support you with any help you need so feel free to reach out at any time.

tips for success
-
Focus on the learning rather than the grade. This is easier said than done but if you
immerse yourself in the material, invest the time and ask questions when you have
them, you will greatly benefit from it (and so will your grade).
-
Don't be ok with staying stuck. Take advantage of the many office hours we provide, the
discussion board and email.
-
Show up. You are expected to be in all lectures and sections. Apart from the fact that
they are required, being present with the course will help you gain a deeper understanding
of the material.
-
Come to office hours and introduce yourself! Get to know the staff,
everyone is kind, knowledgeable and here to help
-
Start early! Start early! Start early! Sometimes small bugs take hours to solve.
You'll be able to think more clearly if time isn't a huge stressor.
Added bonus: office hours are significantly less busy if you go earlier in the
week so if you do need help, it's easier and faster to get it.
-
Take advantage of the creative projects You could build a portfolio
which supports your future job search
