Step 1: Visit https://atom.io/ and download the installer.

Step 2: Optional - Choose a theme
Step 2a: Select the theme picker
Step 2b: Select a different theme.
Step 3: Install packages
Step 3a: Type in the names of the packages to search for them, then press install.
Recommended packages to install are:
- open-in-browsers
- mixed-indent-warning
- pretty-json
- Optional (useful later): platformio-ide-terminal
Step 4: Check your editor settings. First open up your preferences (seen here from a Mac), for Windows it is the File->Settings menu.
Step 4b: Look through the list of options and ensure the following are set:
- Preferred line length is no more than 100 characters (default is 80)
- Soft wrap is turned OFF
- Soft tabs are on
- Tab length is 2, 3, or 4 (default is 2)
- Tab type is auto
