The UW Instant Messenger (uwIM) service provides an easy and secure way to let you communicate with your classmates and instructors. uwIM allows you to:
Two uwIM applications are available for both student and instructor use. The
first is a stand-alone client similar to popular IM clients such as, ICQ and
MSN Messenger. The second utility is a Java Applet which can be used directly
from your browser to chat and use your buddy list.
The uwIM client is an instant messanging application that can be customized by its user. The client can be setup directly from a link which will download the latest version onto a system, install and run it. Figure 1 shows the uwIM client interface looks at startup. | ![]() Figure 1 |
The web-based uwIM Applet can be used by any machine connected to the University of Washington Intranet. No installation is required for this option. Simply go to the uwIM download page and click on the link open applet link and login. Figure 2 shows the uwIM Applet interface looks at startup. | ![]() Figure 2 |
To install and run the UW instant messaging client (uwIM) you must have the following:
If you meet all these requirements, you will be able to launch the uwIM client right now.
If not you can download the latest Java runtime here.
Checking Compatibility
If you want to install and use uwIM, you must verify that your system is ready. uwIM requires the latest Sun JavaTM Virtual Machine (JVM). Click the "Get Java" link and visit Sun's download web site to ensure your system is ready for uwIM installation.
Note: A note could alternatively say "Webstart not detected" which means webstart has not been detected on your system. If you are sure it is install, you can disregard this message. If you are not sure, make sure you go to Sun's "Get Java" page to check.
You have now installed the uwIM client.
Once you have installed the uwIM client, you will need to log in to the University of Washington servers to chat with friends, teachers, and classmates. You must have a UW netID to log into uwIM; your UW netID and password are used for your uwIM login and password. If you do not have a UW netID, go to the UW Computer and Networking web site for more details about how to create a UW netID.
If you need to change the server you are logging into, click on the Server Check Box and enter the correct server (for example: uwim.cs.washington.edu) in the Server Text Box and click Log In.
If you do not know the correct server, check the current uwIM download page.
You are now logged in to uwIM.
TOPWhen you are finished using uwIM, you can log off of the University of Washington servers. You can log off by using one of two methods.
UW instant messaging (uwIM) allows you to send messages and chat with other users of uwIM. These conversations are private and only occur between two people. To chat with more than one other person at a time, you can create a public chat room (see Creating a public chat room). You can intiate a private chat using one of the following methods.
When you are logged on to uwIM, your uwIM status is show to everyone who has you in their buddy list. By default, when you log in to uwIM you are listed as Online. You can change your status to tell buddies a more specific status.

At any time, you can save a chat conversation - both private chats and public chats. The messages will be saved as a text file to a location you specify.
You cannot print chat conversations directly from the uwIM client. To print chat conversations, you must save the conversation as a text file (see Saving a chat conversation). Then open and print the file from notepad.
TOPYou will need to create a chat room If you want to facilitate discussions online. Chat rooms can created for any purpose: Course discussions, a meeting place for friends, or a public forum.
Your chat room will appear as a new window and the name of your chat room will appear in the folder you selected in step 2. Other uwIM users can now join your chat room.
TOPPublic chat rooms are open to anyone. All you need is the EXACT name of the public chat room
The chat room you selected will appear as a new window; your nickname will appear in the In Chat Room list.
TOPYou can join as many chat rooms as are available (see Joining a public chat room). As you join each room, a new window or conversation name (depending on how your preferences are set) will appear for each room.
TOPYou can hide both private and public chat rooms. When you hide a chat room, you are still participating in that room. When you view the chat room again, you will still see all the messages that occured since you joined that room.
You can show any active private and public chat rooms. When you hide a chat room, you are still participating in that room. When you view the chat room again, you will still see all the messages that occured since you joined that room.
This information is valid for both private and public chat rooms. Some contextual stuff about exiting chats
When you want to chat with another user of uwIM, you need to add them to your Buddy List. You can add people to your buddy list using their UW netID. Buddy lists can be arranged in groups
A request is then sent out asking permission to let you add him/her to your list. If he/she accepts, you will be notified and the buddy will be added to your list.
You can remove a person from your buddy list at any time.
The buddy is deleted immediately. Your buddy is not notified that you have removed him from your list
You can organize your buddy list by groups. By default, all of your buddies are listed in "Buddy Group".
You can delete groups in your buddy list. Deleting a group will not delete the buddies listed in that group, instead those buddies will be moved into the Default Buddy Group group.
When users want to add you to their buddy list, you can require them to get your authorization first. By requiring authorization, you maintain control over who can chat with you. By default, you are asked permission whenever someone tries to add you to their buddy list.
Your preference change will take effect for all future conversations
TOPThis features allows you to perform other computer work while engaging in a chat session. Pop-up messages will display from your system tray if you have an active chat session hidden or minimized.
Menu tabs allow quick access to the uwIM tools without hogging your systems' desktop space. You may reposition the tabs one of four ways.
The menu bar allows you to select a view from a drop-down list while hiding the other options. The tabs display the available window views on file folder like tabs bordering the uwIM window.
