Treasure Hunt!

January 5, 2004

This is it! The credit part of the homework is to answer the questions listed below. You can find all of the information by following links from the CSE 142 course web.  You should not have to use a search engine or start from a point outside the course web.

Find the answers, and then:

Compose a single message that includes all the original questions, plus your answers.  (Hint: it is not necessary to retype the questions! Make the computer do the work.)

Send the information by e-mail to your TA. Your e-mail message should include your full name, student ID #, and quiz section ID (points off if you forget any of these, on this or any other work turned in!).  Send the e-mail from the account to which you want e-mail sent to you.  It is best if this is your UWNetId account.  Do not send to the instructor! (If you are not registered by Friday, send to the TA of the section you attended Thursday, and include a note explaining who you are.)

Do not mail until after you have attended your first quiz section on Thursday. This is because both teacher and student assignments to particular sections will not be final until then.  Also, the answer to question 11 won't be available until Thursday.

There are only a small number of points for the assignment, and it will not be weighted as heavily as later assignments.  The grade is based both on form (following instructions precisely, etc.) and on content (the actual answers).

Deadline: mail must be received after your quiz section on Thursday the 8th, and before 4:00 pm, Friday, January 9.

  1. Lots of material for past quarters of CSE142 is on-line.  On the first midterm exam for CSE142 during winter 2003, the answer in the first blank of question 2 was "instance variable". What was the answer in the next blank ("the _____________ is executed and...")?

  2. Slides are posted for each lecture. Slides may also be posted from previous quarters.  How many slides were there in the lecture about ArrayLists on July 30 during summer, 2003?

  3. In order to be prepared for the lecture on Friday, January 9, which chapter/section(s) should you have read from the textbook before coming to lecture?

  4. Where does quiz section AC meet?

  5. Where do TAs hold their office hours?

  6. True or False: If you have a question, you can ONLY go to see your own professor or your own TA.

  7. a) True or False: "When getting help from people not on the course staff, it's OK to use their ideas without acknowledging their assistance."
    b) True or False: "When writing programs and writing homework solutions in this course, it is OK to use part of someone else's program or solution, as long as it has been modified by you."
    c) True or False: "When writing programs and writing homework solutions in this course, it is OK to ask questions and discuss ideas with others."
    d) Where in the Web did you find the answers to 7a, b, anc c?

  8. Computers are available for your use in the IPL. What does the abbreviation IPL stand for, and where is it located?  What time does it close on Fridays?  What time does it open on Sundays?

  9. a) Where is Doug's office located?
    b) What does Hal do at 10:30 on Mondays?

  10. Java is distributed free by Sun, and comes with a huge amount of documentation.  The documentation can be copied to your computer, or browsed on-line.  One of our working-at-home web pages points you to the Java 2 home page.  Find it; from there, explore and answer the following questions:
    a) What language other than English is the information available in?
    b) If you "browse the documentation" you will eventually find the "Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, v 1.4.2 API Specification", which has a list of packages.  What is the name of the first package listed?

  11. The answers to this question will be sent to the two main communication media for the class: the first half via e-mail to the class mailing list and the second on the class Epost discussion list. They'll be sent a day before this part of the assignment is due. Be patient, and keep watching the list. We're not saying when the message will appear - don't write to the course staff asking when the message will be sent. When it does appear, it will be very obvious.

  12. Suppose your e-mail service is interrupted, and you miss a message that we have sent by e-mail to the entire class. Where can you find an archive copy of all e-mail messages that have been sent to the class?
