Hi, I’m Matt! I grew up in Japan and Toronto, Canada, and joined UW as a teaching professor in 2023. I got an M.S. and two B.S.’s from UCLA, where I studied a combination of computer science, math, and economics. My (relatively small) research background is in programming languages, which I’ve also taught (along with web development, data science & machine learning, and software engineering). My go-to “me” activities are listening to music, reading, and video games; recent favourites include underscore’s U, Claire Keegan’s Small Things like These, and Sam Eng’s Skate Story. There’s a lot I’m happy to talk about, from “computer science-y” stuff (e.g. getting involved in open-source or why I love programming languages) to completely unrelated things (like how much I love Wikipedia or my opinions on rap producer tags).
