CSE/IMT 100: Assignment 4

Enhancing Your Home Page

The purpose of this lab is for you to take all that you have learned about Web authoring and jazz up your home page. While there are a few minimum requirements that will need to be met, the important component of this assignment is to be creative! In doing this assignment, don’t forget to use the Web as a source of inspiration (and code!). How you chose to create this new Web page is entirely up to you (hand-code it, use an editor, etc.). Email the URL of your completed page (or pages) to your TA no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, October 14. You can check out this sample page to see what the results look like.

Minimum page requirements:

  1. Experiment with background color and texture, selecting something other than the default white (requires editing the BODY tag of a Web page).

  1. Insert at least 5 links (Of these five, one should be to the course Web page).

Other URLs to consider:

Ø      UW home page (http://www.washington.edu)

Ø      UW Library Gateway (http://www.lib.washington.edu)

Ø      Seattle Sidewalk (http://seattle.sidewalk.com)

  1. Format sections of text to demonstrate different fonts, sizes, and colors.

  1. Insert at least one image.

  1. Insert at least one plain or custom horizontal ruler.

  1. Insert at least one ordered or unordered list.

Above and Beyond (for those who really want to impress):

  1. Insert a table with at least 2 cells. To create a table in MS Word, select “Table” then click “Insert Table”. You will be presented with a grid. Drag your mouse over the grid to highlight the number of cells you want in your table. Once you have created a table you can right click anywhere on the table to set properties for the entire table or for individual cells.
  2. Activate an image by making it a hyperlink.
  3. Create an internal link that jumps to some other point on the page. To create an internal link in MS Word you must first create a bookmark:

Ø      Click where you want to insert a bookmark

Ø      On the insert menu, click “Bookmark”

Ø      Under Bookmark name, type or select a name. Once you have a bookmark, you can reference it when you create a hyperlink elsewhere on the page.
