Homework #2

Operating systems (MacOSX, WindowsXP, WindowsVista)

Text Editors

Text editor versus Word Processor:

  • A text editor allows you to create files that only contain text while a word processor allows you to format the text (change fonts and colors and sizes and layouts).

  • Text editors are commonly used for programming (i.e. to write computer code).

  • If you create a file using a text editor, you can open and change it in any other text editor.

  • The most common text editors for the PC are Notepad and Wordpad (but there are many, many more out there, many available for free). The most common word processor is MicrosoftWord.

Text editor in PC and Windows:

A common text editor on a PC running Windows is called Notepad NotePad Logo

The text editor you'll probably find in the lab Mac computers is called Text Wrangler TextWrangler logo. It might be in the utilities folder: Utilities icon on the Mac
