Due: Monday, April 6 by 11:59 pm.

Please use the dropbox linked from the CSEP 524 web page to submit your homework online. Any common format like pdf or doc/docx is fine.

  1. Read The Free Lunch Is Over: A Fundamental Turn Toward Concurrency in Software, Herb Sutter, Dr. Dobb's Journal, March 2005. Write a short review (between a half and a full page, using a reasonable font size). Your review should include a brief summary of the paper, the key points the paper attempts to make, whether you agree or disagree with those points, and why you agree/disagree.
  2. Read Dark Silicon and the End of Multicore Scaling, Hadi Esmaeilzadeh, Emily Blem, Renée St. Amant, Karthikeyan Sankaralingam, and Doug Burger, International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) '11, June 2011. (See the wikipedia page for Dennard Scaling if you are not familiar with the term.) Write a short review (between a half and a full page, using a reasonable font size). Your review should include a brief summary of the paper, the key points the paper attempts to make, whether you agree or disagree with those points, and why you agree/disagree.
  3. Write 2-3 discussion questions/topics relating to these two papers. These should not be simple factual questions, but rather questions designed to spur discussion and (polite) debate. You may be asked to read some of your questions to help kick of the paper discussion in class.
