CSEP510 Autumn 2013 - Syllabus

Course Content

Tools and methods to support rapid prototyping and user-centered design

Current HCI research topics (often with guest lecturers, reading)

The main work will be a course project. There will also be labs and reading reports.

Reading Component and Reports

Starting Oct 7, there will be presentations and discussions of current HCI research, including guest speakers. For many of the classes I'll assign 1-3 papers or chapters to read, either about the research presentation or HCI techniques. Please read these in advance of class.

For each assigned paper, write a short summary of the paper (150-300 words), and for the research papers, raise an interesting question about the work for discussion in class. (Feel free to raise more than one question if more occur to you, but only one is required for the assignment.) We'll make your questions available to the guest speakers in advance.

Reading reports will be due each Sunday at 6pm, the evening before class, so that we have time to gather the questions and send them to the speaker. These should be submitted using Dropbox. You can format them as plain text, .doc, .docx, or .pdf files.

These will be graded 5 points per report (3 points for the summary, 2 points for the question). If you don't get the report done by Sunday at 6pm, you can submit it for partial credit up until class time -- if it's late, only points for the summary, not the questions.

Grading

Grading will roughly correspond to 60% project, 15% labs, 15% reading reports, and 10% class participation.
