CSE 590h HCI/Interactive Systems Seminar (Autumn '20)

This quarter's seminar will take a more loose format centered around socializing over Zoom digitally. Please check the notes below for planned events.

Upcoming

30 Oct 2020: Show & Tell

Goal: After this seminar, we'll learn more about work from other subfields within HCI and how it may apply to our own research

Do before: Pick something for show & tell Find something related to your research interest that you want others to know about. Examples include a paper, blog post, or book you recently read, a video you recently saw, or a tool you recently worked with.
We intend for this to be something external to your own research, but if you've done something cool, we want to hear about it!

Activity: Show & Tell
In small (3-5) breakout groups, we'll take turns sharing what we brought and answering questions others have about it.

In 2-3 min (depending on group size), each group member will share the following:

  • What is your show and tell item?
  • Why do you find it cool?
  • How does it change the way you think or way you approach something?

Other group members will ask questions to learn more about each show & tell item and how they might find it inspiring or useful.

Debrief
We'll reserve the final 10-15 minutes for debriefing as a group. We'll ask someone from each group to summarize their group's show & tell. Kelly & Benji will also share the plan for next week.

Schedule:

  • 12:00-12:05: chat amongst ourselves as we wait for others
  • 12:05-12:10: Kelly & Benji give overview of day
  • 12:10-12:35: form random breakout rooms of 3-5
  • 12:35-12:45: come back together as a group and debrief
  • 12:45-12:50: share plan for next week
23 Oct 2020: Informal Research Sharing

Goal: After this seminar, we'll be more aware of what other research is happening at DUB and how we may be able to support each other.

Do Before: Think about what you want to say about your research Spend a few minutes thinking about what you want to share about your research.

Activity: Sharing and Support Each Other's Research
In small (3-5) breakout groups, we'll take turns sharing our research to inform others and also get ideas from others.

In 2-3 min (depending on group size), each group member will share the following:

  • What is something you have been working on recently? How did you choose to pursue this research?
  • What about it was novel, challenging, or unexpected?
  • What is something you are a bit uncertain or stuck on? (e.g. looking for related work on __ , lacking expertise about ___, not sure how to do __)

Other group members will serve as a constructive and attentive audience and suggest ideas, reference prior literature, and/or share enthusiasm!
