cse510 ->How to Submit Paper Reviews

CSE 510 -- Spring 2001 -- How to Submit Paper Reviews

The two major components of the course are reading the papers, and the course project. The other assignments are relatively light. The field of human-computer interaction is now emerging and the literature has grown enormously in the past few years. You have an opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of a field in only 10 weeks, but this requires considerable reading. The lectures and discussions may not cover all of the readings.

During this quarter we will be running a study to compare two methods of submitting paper reviews and discussing the assigned readings outside of class.  Some weeks you will use the E-Post system (a UW Catalyst tool), while other weeks you will use the WebAnn annotation system. These systems are described in more detail below.

We are interested in how the two methods compare.  We also want to record any comments, suggestions or thoughts you have about your experience using the two systems. We will be tracking participation in both systems throughout the quarter.  The data we collect will only be published in summary form or anonymously.  Participating in the study is voluntary and choosing not to participate will not affect your grade.   (However, submitting paper reviews somehow will be part of your grade.)

Please submit a brief evaluation of each assigned reading by noon of the day before the class in which that paper will be discussed (see below for the skip policy).   In addition, for each paper respond to at least one other person’s comments or questions before class.

Each review should include:

The Schedule has links for submitting your paper reviews and responding to other student’s comments. For each assigned reading we will grade your review and response together on a 0-3 scale (2 points for review, 1 point for response to other comments). The expectation is that a reasonable review and response will get full credit - in other words, 3 is not reserved for exceptional efforts.

Note that we are looking for brief reviews that summarize the main points and evaluate the reading. A long review is not necessary (although if you have a lot to say, go ahead).

Skips: You can skip up to 5 reviews. (A very few papers are marked "don't skip," however.) For each skip you have left at the end of the quarter we will drop one of your lowest grades. For example, if you have 3 skips left your 3 lowest review grades will be dropped.

In exceptional circumstances make a prior arrangement with Alan or A.J.

Catalyst E-Post system
E-Post is a message board tool.  For the weeks when we use E-Post, each paper will have its own E-Post discussion area where you can submit your summary and comments. Follow the link from the schedule to access the E-Post discussion area for that paper.  To use E-Post you will be need to enter your UW NetID.

WebAnn Annotation System
WebAnn is an annotation tool that provides both personal and public annotations.  For the weeks when we use WebAnn you will make public annotations on the paper to submit your summary and comments.
