Midterm Project:

Email your custom zip file to bruceh@cs.washington.edu. KEEP A COPY!

Construct a (Soundscape, musical composition) (your choice of terminology) of ~3 minutes duration minimum, using your choice of Pure Data or Supercollider. Maximum length: Don't get boring.

This should be in the form of a set of patch files in PD or SC format, with any other supplementary files. It should be accompanyed by several paragraphs of "Program Notes" describing your methodology and intentions. Sort of a "Theory of operation". Be clear on how to play it, as well.

Think about the form of your effort: I like Percy Scholes' definition of musical form as "a series of strategies designed to find a successful mean between the opposite extremes of unrelieved repetition and unrelieved alteration." You need to find a balance.

This piece could be completely pre-defined by you, or could be such that random elements allow for unique iterations of the piece on successive playings, your choice.

Here is a discussion of musical form that may help your thinking:

Good luck! and be adventurous! There is no right answer, there are many interesting efforts, and that's what we are looking for.
