Extra Credit Ideas

DUE: You will have until 5:00PM on Friday, March 12, to complete any extra credit

Overview:

There are many directions to go once you have the basic components for digital simulation of physical structures.  Perry Cook’s book covers many different instruments and ideas and you may pick any of these.  My only suggestion is to “stay within yourself”- don’t try anything too hard or you probably won’t be able to finish it.  Here are my favorite ideas:

Idea #1 -  A Bowed String (Cook p. 102)

Idea #2 – Add Stiffness to the String Model (Cook p. 103)

Piano strings are stiffer that guitar strings.  Cook discusses how to add weak stiffness to the string model using a series of all-pass filters.

Idea #3 – Marimba (Cook p. 105)

Really stiff systems like rigid bars can be modeled using banded waveguides.

Idea #4 – Clarinet Model (Cook p. 122)

A simple clarinet model is not all that different from the string model.

Idea #5 – Gong (Cook p. 134)

To simulate a gong, one extends the string model, with stiffness, to two dimensions.  This leads to a large number of components, which you might want to construct via a program that writes the Verilog for you.
