From bworrell@fhcrc.org Sun Nov 9 22:21:19 1997 Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 20:39:38 -0800 From: "Worrell, Brandon L" To: "'Martin Dickey (E-mail)'" Subject: Project Proposal for the FHCRC Funding Information Resource for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center maintains a database of government institutions and private foundations that can provide funds for cancer research. Many of these institutions (such as the National Institutes of Health) have many different types of grants available, each with different requirements and due dates. This database is maintained by the Funding Information Resource in the Grants office at FHCRC. FHCRC currently has a limited database set up in Microsoft Access. The current database design is poor and the forms and queries written in Access are not adequate. FHCRC needs someone to re-design the database, transfer all of the existing data to the new database, and write a nice GUI. For maintenence purposes it will be necessary to use existing tools that Information Services at FHCRC are familiar with. The back-end will be written for Sybase SQL Server System 11 and the front-end will be written in PowerBuilder. Back-end tasks include designing and implementing the database, possibly writing a few stored procedures, and encapsulating business rules in triggers. Front-end tasks include writing one application, or possibly two applications. One application is intended to be deployed to all of the investigators at the FHCRC. This front-end tool will include searching tools and canned reports. The end-users should be able to query by institutions, due dates, specific requirements of the grant, and others. Specific "canned" reports will also be provided for frequently used search criteria. Another application will include the the same capabilities of the end-user application but will be targeted for the administrators in the Funding Information Resource. This application will include additional forms for entry and maintenence of the data. Upon completion this project will be handed off to the Information Services department for maintenence. The project would really help the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center investigators by making it easier for them to find out the information they need to apply for and receive grants. Considerable expertise is available at the FHCRC to make the project easier. All front-end tools -- PowerBuilder and a graphical administrative tool for Sybase are available. Database modeling software is also available if needed. Thanks, Brandon Worrell
