Problem

Publicly available schedules of transit systems (ex, bus schedules) provide scheduled times at transit stops that are often inaccurate. Applications such as OneBusAway (OBA) strive to solve this problem of inaccurate information by extracting real time information provided by transit officials and present it to users through the web, voicemail, texts and applications on smart phones.

While OBA provides pertinent information in a timely manner, there are several problems with the existing application. Useful features are hidden or not easily accessible, and the mass amount of unfiltered real-time data paired with an unorganized interface keeps OBA focused on expert users and frequent riders. Unfortunately, even with this focused userbase, hidden and unprominent features leaves even frequent riders with a hindered user experience.

Solution

We aim to obviate OBA's problems with a user interface redesign that ensures features are prominent and intuitive for a wide range of users. With this redesign, a large focus was placed on providing a prominent alert notification system that allowed users to easily set alerts for relavent real-time data. Additionally, to accomodate new users and casual riders, OBA 2.0 introduces a new trip planning feature that provides riders with directions to the bus stops and routes needed to be taken. Altogether, these modifications ensure better usability for the existing application as well as provide a wider range of users easy access to real-time transit information.
