Octothorpia Ideas
This project is very open-ended. There's tons of room to be really
creative. To help get you thinking about nifty puzzle ideas, we've
compiled a small list puzzle ideas.
-
A simple geometric game. Have three shapes: a square, a circle,
and a triangle. Additionally, have three holes: a square hole, a
circular hole, and a triangular hole. When a player clicks on a
shape, it is "picked up". If the next click is on the proper
hole, the shape is dropped in. After all three shapes have been
put into their proper holes, the players win.
-
A mathematical game. Print out a pattern of numbers like "1 1 2 3
5 8 __" and a multiple-choice question like "What is the next
number?". Then have four or five buttons with possible answers.
If a user clicks on the correct button, then he or she advances a
level. If a wrong answer is selected, have the game resets
itself. Each level the players win reveals an exit (until at
level five, everything resets back to the way it was).
-
A riddle game with a similar multiple-choice interface as above.
Have many riddles, where a player must answer at least three to
win.
-
The Towers of Hanoi. Here is a sample
game.
-
An area similar to a real MUD, where the goal is to kill some
monster or find some treasure.
-
Tic-tac-toe against a (somewhat) smart computer opponent.
-
A DOOM level, complete with 3-dimensional interface. The goal
could be finding a hidden area (don't make it too
hard!). This is a joke idea, by the way. However, if you do
it, more power to you!
Remember: these are just ideas! You can do something completely
different, as long as it's somewhat interesting. Consider the
geometric game (first on the list) to be the simplest sort of puzzle
that we'll consider interesting enough.
We also haven't even touched one possibility. You can make changes to
players' inventories (the character array in
player_info
) that persist across rooms. So, you could get
together with another team and have a multi-room puzzle where players
need to somehow "pick up" an item in one room and take it to
another! Note that this may be a bit hard to test in the test-bed; so,
you may need to be creative in your testing if you do this.
Soon to have at least a couple more. Check back soon!
