WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT WAS YOUR ACADEMIC PATH? I was born and raised in Redmond, Washington, but really you could say I grew up on the slopes of Crystal Mountain. I spent all my high school years at Eastside Preparatory School across the 520 bridge and am now a Sophomore in the Computer Science major. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST EXPOSURE TO COMPUTER SCIENCE? This is a complex question for me as there were perhaps a few opportunities in my life which could have sparked an interest in Computer Science for me and only one that could take that title. My dad had a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UC Boulder and worked at Microsoft my whole life. I grew up in the culture of computer scientists, but at no point was computer science a part of my life. Even when I decided to take a programming course in high school, it was a disaster and afterwards I could not myself see pursuing it. When I got to UW and learned how great the program was here, I decided to take CSE 142 with Stuart Reges. I owe being a CS major to how accessible and interesting that course was to programming initiates as well as to my awesome TA’s and professor. WHAT GETS YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT COMPUTER SCIENCE? Computer science provides us with the tools to tackle the problems that face society. It is the field of study arguably most pervasive in all aspects of our life, as a result, we can often see the immediate results of our creations. Whether we design mobile games or self-driving cars, you'll get to redesign people's lives and the future of society as a whole. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES, TALENTS, AND SKILLS? Ski Racing/Skiing Hiking/Camping Mountain Biking Overwatch HAVE YOU DONE ANYTHING REMARKABLE? HAS ANYTHING MEMORABLE HAPPENED TO YOU? I've travelled as far as Switzerland and Alaska for alpine ski racing, winning the Alaskan State Downhill Championship for my age group on my trip to the latter. WHAT COMMITMENTS WILL BE CONSUMING YOUR TIME THIS QUARTER? CSE 312, 333, and 369
